For the past few years, I've been running a pretty successful freelance consulting business over the past few years. I had a chance to work with some amazing agencies, startups, and Fortune 500s. I relied on a network of other freelancers and firms - at times having 30+ people working for me at any moment. And the entire time, I never spent a cent on marketing, relying completely on word of mouth and referrals.
In short, my profession is all about connections.
As connected as I was, I was losing touch of people. A project would end, and we'd be so enveloped in the next project that, unless our client/partner followed up with us for another project, we would never hear from them again. I'd have coffee with a freelancer just getting started in software development, and two weeks later, I'd be surprised if I remember their name. I'd meet an awesome angel or entrepreneur, and other than exchanging a couple emails, our relationship never grew beyond a familiar face at an event.
I tried adding everyone on LinkedIn, but it showed nothing other than that I knew them.
I'd keep their business card, but it would just end up in another stack on my desk (ok, CardMunch definitely helps here).
Highrise seemed to be the best solution to keep track of all the different people I knew, categorize them, tag them, add notes. But I had neither the time nor the memory to go to another web application and track them.
I would never follow up with people.
I was missing out on opportunities left and right, and knew it.
