VP, Engineering

Contactually is an early-stage B2B SaaS startup in downtown DC.  We’re growing extremely rapidly — in team size, customers, and revenue — and are seeking a VP of Engineering to lead our development team.. Contactually’s main product offering is used and loved by thousands of businesses, and as we continue to scale out the company and improve the product, we’re looking for an experienced leader to foster and coach a strong engineering organization, and take ownership of the products’ architecture, implementation, and security.

Contactually’s SaaS CRM platform helps professionals stay engaged with their key relationships. We do this by aggregating, cleaning, deduping, and analyzing all of their contact data and interaction history, and then working with them to identify the relationships to stay engaged with, and work with them to stay in touch.

Beyond managing the smooth and safe operation and scaling of the overall platform in terms of users and complexity, there are unique challenges we face. The amount of data being processed, the insights that need to be generated, and the need to build a speedy and engaging user interface all come together. We also care a lot about our team, so hiring and coaching a world-class engineering organization is a top priority. As VP of Engineering, you’ll be responsible for all of this.

We have some major challenges to tackle, but backed by a great team, supportive investors, many thousands of users who believe in what we do, and YOU, we’ll get there.

You:

  • 3-5+ years as a lead software engineer or some level of engineering/technical management
  • Have a background as an active contributor in software development (ideally Rails or similar open source language)
  • Have grown and led engineering teams of 5+ people, ideally in a startup or high performing software environment.
  • Have built and managed an interviewing process.
  • Experienced with scaling out software architectures (in data and/or users)
  • Have implemented and run scrum teams before, either as Scrum Master or something similar.
  • Have a love of waterfall software development…. just kidding. That’s terrible.
  • Knowledge of basic DevOps tools, or experience working with DevOps teams.
  • Based in the DC area, or open to relocation/heavy travel
  • Know that “cloud” is a bit more than a buzzword.

On a daily basis, you’ll:

  • Work with our product, engineering, and QA teams on the production of high quality software for our customers
  • Lead daily standups
  • Coach and mentor individual engineers, help remove roadblocks, and improve sprint performance
  • Participate/lead architectural discussions and decisions across our entire operation.
  • Vet potential candidates for our engineering
  • Play with the office dogs
  • Triage bugs and requests for developer’s time
  • Ensure the smooth operation of Contactually
  • Crank out some code yourself, and know the codebase well :-)
  • Work closely with the VP Product, CEO, and creative team to plan out future product improvements
  • Plan future sprints

About Contactually

  • Mid-stage SaaS startup, backed by a strong mission and values focused around solving user’s problems.
  • Venture backed by great investors on both coasts and around the world.
  • Relaxed and fun office environment, flexible vacation policy, roll-your-own hours
  • Regularly covered and mentioned by the press, a leader in the DC Tech community.

Customer Success Manager

We are currently seeking a customer success manager to help us continue to aggressively grow Contactually, particularly focused on identifying and executing strategies to reduce paid account churn. We’re still a very small team, and you’ll have a ton of flexibility to define the role and own the entire customer success strategy.

Some background:

Our sales process at Contactually is largely based on inbound leads. Once a user signs up for a trial on Contactually, our inside sales team contacts them to a) suggest strategies to best use Contactually for the user’s needs and b) ultimately convince our trial users to upgrade to a paid Contactually account. This education and sales process generally requires multiple calls over 3-4 weeks during the user’s 30-day trial.

That’s where the customer success role comes in. While the sales team is focused on closing new paid accounts, you will ensure that those customers continue to regularly use and pay for Contactually.

Here’s an overview of the responsibilities for this role:

  • Analyze both our current paid and recently downgraded user data to identify trends that lead to increased churn, including low engagement and other customer attributes.
  • Based on this ongoing analysis, design and implement strategies for reducing churn. These will include writing email marketing campaigns and calling high-value accounts most likely to downgrade.
  • Measure and iterate on what works best.
  • Conduct customer development to better understand why paid users are downgrading and/or not engaging with Contactually, and spec out feature improvements to address those problems.
  • For large paid accounts with hundreds of seats, work with our enterprise sales team to successfully onboard those customers, including initial education and training.

Overall, we’re looking for someone who’s a self-starter that loves our vision, and who wants to help us grow Contactually as quickly as possible. You need to be passionate about working with customers and constantly asking yourself “how can I make this better?”. You’ll be an integral part of a fast-growing company and — assuming you do well — there will be many opportunities for growth and promotion.

(Send your resume to jobs@contactually.com, or click below to apply.)

Inside Sales Account Executive

We are currently seeking an inside sales account executive to help us continue to aggressively grow Contactually. We’re still a very small team, so you will have the chance to take on a large chunk of ownership of the team and grow into a more senior position really soon.

Our sales process at Contactually is largely based on inbound leads. People sign up for a trial account on Contactually, and if they start using product and activate to a certain threshold, they are passed on to our inside sales account executive team. That team will then call up the lead, get their feedback on the product, and ultimately convince them to upgrade to a paid account. Today we largely sell to individuals and small teams, but we expect to grow upmarket and start selling into larger teams via existing customers in the near future.

Here’s an overview of the responsibilities for this role:

  • Respond to inbound Contactually leads through phone calls and targeted email messages. Pitch the benefits of Contactually — and demo the product as needed — and convince the lead to upgrade to a paid account.
  • Collect feedback from leads to understand why they are/aren’t upgrading to a paid account, passing that feedback along to the product team to further refine our feature set and increase conversion.
  • Work closely with the founders to build out sales best practices and continually refine our sales process. We’re a young team and want to keep improving our ability to sell.
  • For very large accounts, demo Contactually to the chief stakeholders, manage trials for an initial group of users, and close deals with the rest of the team.

Overall, we’ll looking for someone who’s a self-starter that loves our vision, and who wants to help us grow Contactually as quickly as possible. You’ll be an integral part of a fast-growing company and — assuming you do well — there will be many opportunities for growth and promotion to a more senior role.

Here’s an overview of the majority responsibilities for this role:

  • Drive the overall strategy and goals of the Customer Support team
  • Coach and manage the teams of support reps to ensure we’re constantly improving
  • Implement processes and software to improve our support efforts:  drive down first response times, increase customer NPS, resolve issues as quickly as possible
  • Continuously expand our support knowledge base to better allow our customers to self-serve
  • Quickly grow the support team, adding approximately 2 reps every quarter

You:

  • 4-7 years of Customer Service/Support experience, ideally with a SaaS startup
  • Experience managing teams of support reps, ideally both local and remote
  • Experience implementing and managing support software, including ZenDesk, Salesforce, or Desk.com
  • Strong data analysis chops to review and make decisions based on rep performance results
  • Love for helping customers and making their day!
